Increasing the climate change resilience and public awareness of the Pointe Sable Environmental Protection Area (PSEPA) and Pigeon Island National Landmark (PINL) ecosystems
This project will enhance the climate resilience of coastal ecosystems within the Pointe Sable Environmental Protection Area (PSEPA) and Pigeon Island National Landmark (PINL) by strengthening the coastlines and improving the management and health of ecosystems.
Participatory mangroves and reef assessments will generate information on ecosystem health, function, and mutual interaction; economic and environmental resource generation potential, and anthropogenic influence on ecosystem functionality. Assessments will inform the development of interventions, such as demarcation, coastal stabilization, habitat restoration, and management plans, which will be implemented collaboratively. Assessments will advise possible regulatory incentives and/or disincentives for both sustainable use of resources and adherence to coastal and marine protection measures. Ecosystem valuations and training will build capacity of resource users and communities to contribute to ecosystem restoration measures, install green infrastructure, maintain gray infrastructure that enhances the performance and resilience of natural climate change adaptation systems (hybrid solutions), and to pursue sustainable livelihoods.
